Grupo Telares Maracay Celebrates Its Centennial with the Staging of the Play

As part of the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Grupo Telares Maracay, the Humboldt Cultural Association in Caracas hosted the presentation of the play “My Name Is Esteban, the Immigrant from Ararat”.
The production pays tribute to the life of this extraordinary Venezuelan of Armenian origin. The play journeys from his forced departure from his homeland alongside his parents and siblings to his arrival in Venezuela, where he launched a distinguished business career that established him as a key figure in the country’s social and productive sectors.
The play highlights two emblematic moments that reflect the integrity and ethical principles that guided Don Esteban throughout his life:
- His 1928 meeting with General Juan Vicente Gómez: At a very young age, he sought a meeting to resolve an administrative issue that threatened to drive his business into bankruptcy.
- His stance during the 1950s: His firm refusal to comply with a request from General Pérez Jiménez involving an overcharge in the purchase of telecommunications equipment.
Beyond these anecdotes, the play highlights Don Esteban’s role as a tireless creator of jobs and wealth for Venezuela. With a presence in sectors such as textiles and agriculture—where he left an indelible mark—his work generated more than 100,000 direct and indirect jobs.
A family man, deeply faithful, and remarkably generous, Don Esteban contributed with vision, tenacity, and hard work to the socioeconomic development and growth of Venezuela throughout much of the 20th century.
